MCH Colleagues Complete Report on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Advocates’ Pandemic Experiences

Managing Crises from the Kitchen Table

Dr. Alisa Velonis (Associate Professor in the Community Health Sciences division and MCH faculty member), Molly McGown (Visiting Research Associate), and Lisa Haen (MCH PhD candidate) interviewed domestic and sexual violence advocates about their occupational health experiences during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. In particular, they were interested in learning about the impact that the closure of services and shift to working from home had on their psychological and professional wellbeing, and what they envisioned could be done differently to support advocates and survivors during future public health emergencies.

The report that emerged from this research details how the pandemic exacerbated existing occupational wellness challenges, and poses a series of recommendations that advocacy directors, administrators, and funders could consider implementing to support advocates on a daily basis, as well as steps to put in place before the next natural disaster or emergency.

Congratulations on Dr. Velonis, Molly, and Lisa on this critical and timely report!
