MPH in Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology

Pronouns: She/her

About

Prior to entering the MCHEPI MPH program, Asan was an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic. she was trained in pre-hospital care for pregnant patients and got to interact in clinicals with that population. In the field, Asan had a few pregnant patients that she cared for as well.

Asan's areas of interest in maternal and child health include maternal mortality rates in child-bearing individuals of the African diaspora, maternal health in BIPOC and LGBT+ communities, global data patterns in adverse maternal outcomes of African descendant women, and socio-cultural ideas of birthing. She is also interested in alternative health practices as sustainable methods to control adverse maternal outcomes.

Asan's goal in the future is to provide an analytical understanding of maternal data to help influence organizations at all levels. She wants to focus on the intersection of analysis and implementation. In addition, Asan wants to provide data interpretation skills to aid in the creation of legislation toward improving maternal outcomes. On the other hand, Asan's academic goals include exposure and skill building. She want to expose herself to the diverse workforce of public health and how they relate to each other. She also want to expose herself to the interest of others in this field and how they work with the maternal child health field. Last, Asan wants to build skills that are transferable to the work world so that she is an asset to any team that she is in.

Fun Fact: I am a huge history buff and love interacting in that community. When I was nineteen I had the privilege of being in an NPR interview with fellow students and professors. The discussion was on W.E.B DuBois's The Souls of Black Folk.
