Julia Liu is a first-year PhD candidate in the Epidemiology track with a concentration in Maternal and Child Health - Epidemiology. In Oregon, Julia touched on different fields in the world of Maternal and Child Health. Mainly in Mulntomah County, Julia worked in high schools that housed School-Based Health Centers, specifically the ones that worked with teenage pregnancy. Holding and teaching sex education workshops, they also worked with students on the importance of nutrition and physical activity, and how to eat healthy/cooking on a limited budget. Julia worked with students to advocate for additional funding to School-Based Health Centers.
Julia's primary interests within Maternal and Child Health include maternal and infant mortality, postpartum depression, reproductive health (STIs), and nutrition. Julia’s professional goals include serving as an epidemic intelligence service officer and consulting for surveillance systems on maternal and infant mortality. Julia also hopes to become a professor to continue to teach and hold space for students whose interests also lies in MCH.
Fun Fact- Back in Oregon, Julia lives on a farm where she plays "Marco Polo" with her goats Millie and Gilbert.
