About
Ema graduated from DePaul University in 2019 with a BS in Health Sciences with a concentration in Bioscience, a minor in Biologic Studies, and a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Certificate.
Ema’s first maternal and child health research project was focused on high cesarean rates in Argentina. She was awarded the Arnold Mitchem Fellowship to travel to Argentina and complete semi-structured interviews to understand the perspective of physicians, doulas, midwives, and mothers on cesarean sections. Ema presented this research on multiple occasions and was awarded 1st place for an oral presentation in science education at the Illinois Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (IL LSAMP) Symposium in 2018.
Ema is currently a Research Assistant for Family Connects Chicago (FCC) and the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (IBCCP) evaluation teams. For FCC, she is assisting the evaluation team on evaluating the effectiveness of a home visiting pilot program for postpartum women across various Chicago hospitals. For IBCCP, she is focusing her time on the provider survey which will provide a clearer understanding of the role of providers in the IBCCP through COVID-19.
Her interests are in maternal and child health epidemiology, perinatal health epidemiology, maternal health, and evaluation of maternal and child health programs.
In the future, she hopes to pursue a PhD in Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology. Ema's goal is to be a professor that is devoted to MCH evaluation research with a focus on quantitative methodology.
Fun Fact- Ema's native language is Bosnian! She started learning English when she was 6 years old.
